Dear alumni and friends,
After a successful fall semester, we have welcomed 2022 with optimism, despite the resurgence of concerns with the omicron variant. Drawing strength from our global community, we are proud to celebrate The University of Texas at Austin’s recent achievements and are energized by our ever-growing number of new initiatives, as detailed here:
- President Hartzell accepted the Senator Paul Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization recognizing the university’s excellence in global engagement.
- UT Austin earned a prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program award as a top producer of scholarship recipients, providing more than $2.7 million in education abroad funding over 20 years. In addition, Texas Global awards $1.3 million annually in scholarships to students learning or interning abroad.
- Texas Global and our many colleges, schools, and units celebrated International Education Week, with 80 on-campus and online events highlighting the breadth of our efforts on the Forty Acres and beyond.
- During the 2020-2021 academic year, Texas Global awarded 38 grants totaling $400,000 to 13 colleges collaborating with partners in 26 countries. The funded projects expand UT's global reach in supporting research, student learning, and on-campus internationalization. We are thrilled to have launched the Texas Global Publication Fund, a new funding opportunity for faculty who seek to publish original work in a language other than English.
These milestones highlight the advances we've made in UT Austin's global engagement. I invite you to read additional stories in this newsletter and join us in our efforts as we bring the world to UT and UT to the world.

Oct. 19 | "But there was a catch—although I was feeling profusely better about myself, this sudden influx of motivation made me want to catch up on all of the places and things I longed to see and do in Edinburgh. I wanted to take a day and climb Arthur’s Seat. I wanted to bring my morning coffee and a book to the top of Calton Hill and stay until the sun was on its way down. Above all, I felt I ought to do what I said I wanted to when I submitted my bio for this blog, what Henry David Thoreau wanted to do as well: 'to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life…to know it by experience, and to be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion.'"
